Was great to perform at Aca Fest for the second year running. And as for the gig at the Singapore Arts Cafe - a HUGE thank you to Jonathan for kindly hosting us again :) As some of you may know, the Singapore Arts Cafe has closed down. And although all good things must come to an end, we (and I'm sure many other music lovers) shall always have fond memories of the cafe and appreciate how Jonathan had set up this wonderful platform for jamming.

Arts Unlimited - A Cappella Workshop

Interested in learning about the basics of a cappella? Come join VoCollision at Arts Unlimited, where we'd be holding a workshop.

Arts Unlimited will be held at Fort Canning Park from 14 to 15 June (10am to 6pm daily). Apart from fun workshops such as ours and others relating to film-making, graffitti, hiphop culture and pop music, there will also be a colourful display of arts & crafts by secondary school students. Last but not least, the Art Market is the perfect place to indulge in some retail therapy. Admission to the event is free and participating in workshops require just a minimal fee.

Still Up & Running Folks

Hola everybody.

We know it's been kinda quiet here. But be rest assured that VoCollision is still functioning and going strong!

In fact, we've been hyper at work, arranging a fresh set of repertoire and getting our vocal cords acquainted with them. *rubs hands with glee* New songs to us would be like ... an Apple i-Phone to the tech geek or an Yves Saint Laurent Muse 2 bag for the fashionista ... something fun to play with and flaunt when the time is right.

So what's the new stuff? And when will you get a chance to listen to it? Well, we're keeping it hush-hush for now. Everyone loves a surprise now and then, right? ;) But stay tuned to find out more!

Post Christmas, Pre New Year

Howdy everyone! We certainly hope that ya all had a fantabulous time soaking up the festivities in 2007 and ushering in the brand new year of 2008.

As you've probably gathered from our previous post, VoCollision was busy carolling in December. We put on our adorable Christmas hats (our better judgement told us to leave our reindeer headgear at home) and kept the crowds entertained at the Pan Pacific Hotel, Singapore Swimming Club and Clifford Centre. It was a good deal of fun while it lasted but with that said, we're glad to chuck 'Deck the Halls' and 'Hark the Herald Angels Sing' aside ... until 12 months later :p

A Walk to September

The kind folks at Resonance invited us to be part of their mini concert, A Walk to September. Being alumni (euphemism for old fogeys) of Reso, we all gladly trooped back to NUS to perform a few songs for them. It was also an opportune time to catch up with old friends :) Watching them and the newer batches strut and sing their stuff, it never ceases to amaze us how much the club seems to grow bigger and better all the time!

Sonic Landscape: Not Just Another Gig

As with other musicians who gig frequently(be it a cappella, pop/rock bands etc), there will come a time when we're asked to perform pro bono. Usually, it comes as an invitation to perform at a large event which promises to showcase our group's talents. Inevitably, most of our minds would immediately go: "no pay leh, should we do it?"

Amateur and semi-professional groups (VoCo being in the grey area that er, separates these 2 group) will empathize. We all(almost) have day jobs. Weijin is still studying, Audrey and Shuying have just embarked on their careers, and Ginny & I have been working for quite a while. So gigging for free doesn't just involve the ideal of passion. Fellow musicians in the know will understand that it also involves sacrifice. Sacrificing precious rest time, sacrificing time with families, as well as sacrificing time that can be used to earn money from paid gigs.

However, when I told the rest of VoCo about Alex's invitation for us to perform at Sonic Landscape, everyone's faces lit up. There was such a resounding "yes" that I felt silly to have asked about their availabilities in the first place. Why?

Now, VoCo's gig history can be considered rather wide. We've performed at weddings, corporate functions, government dinners, IMF, shopping centres and Christmas events to name a few, but none of these had the purpose of showcasing a cappella in its(quote from Vincent) "naked" form. The purpose of us being there at those gigs were mainly the same: to provide music and entertainment to different groups of people. So when we were offered the chance to sing a cappella for the sake of a cappella, to perform to a group of audience who know what a cappella is about, or wish to know more, how could we turn it down?

Through preparing for Sonic Landscape, we learnt and rediscovered many things. Things like how warmups are so important, esp in a cold place like Victoria Theatre. I'm sure some of you in the audience must have felt the chills, because even with the warm lights on stage, some of us were quivering(trust me, it wasn't from the stage fright). Things like how proper planning on our part is vital to minimise stress prior to the performance. That things like these are common-sensical, I do not dispute, but to understand it at a level where it can improve a group's performance is a totally different thing.

I believe that our performances for the past 2 nights have transformed us in many ways. We felt great on stage, we were more daring and creative with our audience interaction. And we're looking forward, with tremendous anticipation to our next gig at Blue Moo on the 28th.

In every sense of the word, Sonic Landscape was an experience.

So what's up next for VoCollision?
We're taking part in the Open Category of this year's National A Cappella Championships! This is probably one of the biggest must-see event in the acappella scene every year, and this year's gonna be a little different as a Semi-final Round (26th July) has been added. The Final Round (29th July) would be held at the Esplanade Recital Studio instead of the usual Concourse area. Do come and support us!

With the growing A Cappella scene in Singapore, the competition gets more exciting each year. We're definitely looking forward to meeting fellow A Cappella folks at the Championships=). And well, that also means we'd better get into the groove of intensive practices soon=P.

As for our next public gig, Danny (from Budak Pantai), has kindly invited VoCollision to perform at the BlueMoo Cafe. A nice rooftop cafe to chill out and catch a good set each month! Big thanks to Chingmei for recommending us=). This gig will fall on one of the fridays in September. We'll keep uall in the loop when the date draws nearer.

T'was our 2nd time performing at the Singapore Arts Cafe but it was definitely just as fun as our first time there. Gonna keep this post short and sweet, so I'll just let the photos do the talkin'.

But before that, of course we'll have to make the essential 'thank u' speech (like those they give at the Grammys, haha). After all, no organiser, no sound guys, no audience means a performance as good as zilch. So here goes , in no order of preference

Sing It Like It Is

'Sing It Like It Is' - and that's exactly what we did, right at The Esplanade Waterfront too!

We travelled through time, taking our audience through a 45 minute a cappella extravaganza. From the old shoobee-doo-wop sounds of a cappella to the jazzy finger-snappin' numbers and thu-thumping retro & techno hits.

Totally loved the glittery Singapore skyline as our backdrop. Best of all, the sky was clear and there wasn't a splatter of rain during our sets (whoever said prayers don't get answered?).

Many thanks to the Singapore A Cappella Society and The Esplanade for organising this event.

Christmas has come and gone in a flash! We just completed a couple of carolling sessions at chijmes over the weekend leading to christmas, as well as a wedding gig at Le Meridien Hotel a few days back.

And with this, it marks our last gig of the year 2006. VoCollision is thankful for the wonderful first year we've had together. 2006 has been a pretty active year for us, notably with our performance at this year's IMF dinner function, our being selected for Noise Singapore Showcase, opportunities to go on live radioshows, as well as a number of other gigs which have pushed us to increase our repertoire and our confidence onstage. And definitely we have grown even closer as a group. Cheers to that!!=)we're looking forward to more!

Noise Singapore Festival!

The school semester has started for some of us, work has been a chore for others and the lucky ones have just been well … busy bumming around. But despite all this, the singing goes on! Recently, VoCollision performed at the YKK Family Day and the IMF dinner (yup, your eyes ain’t playing tricks on you. We’re referring to the much talked-about International Monetary Fund). Simon and Shuying also participated in this year’s Aca Fest.

Aca Fest ’06 @ Victoria Theatre
Aca Fest is the event of the year that a cappella enthusiasts in Singapore look forward to. It features up-and-coming and well-known a cappella groups, as well as winners of the annual Aca Champs. Simon and Shuying had the honour to perform with Equivox at Aca Fest ’06.

YKK Family Day @ Raffles the Plaza
Floors above ground level, at an open arena of this swanky hotel, we braved the gusty winds and sang till the sun went down and the sky turned dark.

IMF dinner @ The Ritz Carlton
It doesn’t matter if we’re singing to one person or ten people. Either way, it’s a whole load of fun. But what’s really cool? To perform for an international audience of a 120 people who have come far and wide from all over the world. We certainly hope that the IMF delegates remember the lovely set of songs we presented to them, even after they leave our sunny shores.

93.8FM's The Living Room

Yeap, that was us, live from the studio - with Happy Together, Sukiyaki and Regular Friends (Pu Tong Peng You). Hope our music and light-hearted banter entertained the morning crowd and didn't cause any traffic accidents in the process, haha!

It was was relaxing and fun with DJ Mahesha at the helm of the programme. That's why we're all grinning from ear to ear by the end of the session.

Open Mic! @ The Singapore Art Cafe

Gosh, we had a ball of a time at Open Mic! We sang, we jammed and we got to listen to other budding a cappella groups. To add icing to the cake, the audience was appreciative and sporting. And as always, it's heart-warming to see familiar faces in the crowd.

Oh yes, a huge thank you to Jonathan for inviting us along to 93.8FM and letting us perform at Open Mic!.

well, well... the concert's finally over! really glad that we had fun on stage, and the audience loved us too! Preparing for this concert has been an exhausting but enriching experience.. i'm proud to see the huge improvement we've made since our debut concert performance in VOI 2 yrs back. yes, i still have those pathetic old recordings...o_O

Big thank you to all our dear friends and families who came to watch us...really appreciate ur support! and huge hugs for my fellow VoColliders for all the time, effort and commitment in making this concert performance look and sound good! a pity i fell so ill during the crucial eve of concert day.. I'm thankful we still managed to pull it off fine...=)well, post-concert plans point to lots of other exciting and meaningful activites like our very-long-postponed mass-birthday celebration..new demo recordings, new song compositions and upcoming gig at the NUS Freshman Inauguration Ceremony. exciting time ahead! but for now, go ahead n enjoy those clips above!

Post VO2 high

After all the intensive practices, splurging of moolah on concert attire and abstaining from throat-killers (The 3 Cs: chilli, chocolates and chips), the big day had finally arrived, woo hoo! And let's just say that all the sacrifices were for a good cause, as Vocal Obsession II rocked!! You know, the earth-shattering kind, think a magnitude of 10 on the Richter scale, hehe.

I love the 3 songs we did, especially the ABBA medley. With the flashy disco lights and funky choreo, it was loads of fun. Think it was a real crowd pleaser too - caught the audience bobbing in their seats, tapping their feet, mouthing the lyrics ...

Well, after the months of preparation, there goes the concert. Many thanks to family and friends who came down to provide us with their undying support, the recruited photographers, AV people and the nice uncle who was in-charge of the auditorium. And of course, to the entire Resonance family who covered all aspects of the concert and put in so much effort, love, time and sweat (thank goodness no tears) to make the entire show a success. You guys are the best! :)

Hey all! It's been quite a while since we last updated.. VoCollision is now back in action! For the past few weeks, we've resumed the groove of intensive rehearsals(plus eating-sprees=P) for the upcoming Resonance Concert - Vocal Obsession II (VOII)! Concert's on 24th JUNE, 7.30pm at Singapore Polytechnic Auditorium. It's now less than a month to the concert and we're really looking forward to it. For those who hvn't booked tix, get them fr us now!

Well these days, we practise about 4 times a week, each session can easily eat up (literally) a day, some of us have more since we're performing with other grps. We spend more time facing each other than our own families! And we definitely don't rem attending tt many hrs of lects!! Oh well, no one's really complaining. Cos we love what we're doing. Waking up at 7am on a sunday morning to travel to campus for prac doesn't feel like a chore when u know the whole grp is in for sth u all enjoy.

Alright, we'll keep this blog active. Will prob post up a couple of video clips fr our rehearsals. Working on our choreography in the next few sessions. And we're gonna revamp this site too. So stay tuned.=)

thank u ijtp for inviting us over! it felt great to step into a galz sch..
in fact, all four of us galz came from all-girls secondary schools..
which probably explains why i felt so at home amidst the screaming..heh heh..

being our 1st ever school gig, felt very excited to be on stage..
it was a really encouraging sight to see the galz sway to our singing, and they needed little introduction to a cappella.. music-savvy peepz!

IJTP Gig

Hello! Decided to write stuff about the Ij gig :) Well I think we all agree that Ij was a BLAST! The audience was responsive, the teachers spontaneous (and forgiving haha; thanks for letting us sabo you guys) and the atmosphere high on adrenaline.

The first impressions we got as we stepped onto the school grounds were "wow! it's so pretty! MOE has a lot of money these days...". It's refreshing to be amongst younger people and performing for a crowd who truly appreciates music (we saw some of you guys grooving to the music; glad to know) it gives us much encouragement as a newly formed group with little exposure.

Even after the performance, some of you gals came up to ask questions about Acappella (I splet it correctly right Gin?lol). As a conclusion, and in true VoCo tradition although not as extravagent, we hopped by the canteen to sink our teeth into good ol' cheap student food fare. Hungry as we were, the food wasn't too bad, only perhaps a little too small in portion for our big eaters, the guys (Derek for one looked devastated and distressed at the size of his noodles haha).

So moving on to our thanks:

Six individuals with a penchant for A Cappella music.

Formed in 2005, the members of this three-girl three-guy group will tantalise you with their lush vocals and dazzling chemistry on stage.

Their versatile repertoire encompasses a variety of languages and genres, boasting renditions of jazz numbers, contemporary hits and oldies infused with an eclectic flavour of their own. Eager to enhance their brand of a cappella music and push creative boundaries beyond limits, these adventurous folks even have an original composition to their name, which was short-listed as a favourite in the Music Category of Noise Singapore 2006.

From corporate functions, live radio stints, to festival showcases, each gig is taken on with much gusto. Of their numerous performances, some notable ones to date include the IMF 2006 dinner for international delegates, FM93.3’s Nokia Live segment, A Cappella Festival ’07, ‘Sing It Like It Is’ at the Esplanade Waterfront and the PAP Joo Chiat Branch Annual Dinner. In 2005’s National A Cappella Championships, the singers clinched 2nd place in the Open Category while representing Resonance, their collegiate a cappella group. Soprano, Audrey Tay, bagged the best soloist award.

This sextet aspires to strike a chord in the hearts of those who listen to their music and is revving to spice up the a cappella scene.
